Laptop Hardware Service and Cleanup.

How often should I get my laptop serviced?

There is no exact answer to this question, as unlike a car engine running in an enclosed environment, a laptop circulates extertal air that's been sucked in, used for cooling and then blown out.

In general, from our experience:

Normal home use, 3-4hrs/day...once every 2 years
Business use, 6-8hrs/day...once a year
Heavy use and gaming, over 10 hrs/day...every 6 months

The most important factor determining the need of a service, is that you noticed the laptop slowing down, overheating and if it shuts down by itself, DO NOT USE IT, bring it straight to us, as you're risking terminal damage.

1. The most important part of the service, is the cleanout of the actual cooling system.

The laptop has to be dissasembled in the majority of cases, the cooling system removed, disassembled and cleaned.

That is not all, the fan has to be taken out of it's shell, the fan rotor shaft has to be lubricated and the most important, the thermal paste that connects the cooling system with the CPU and GPU, has to reapplied.

Some "Cowboys" of the industry, will tell you that they did what they say is a cooling system service, by blowing compressed air into the laptop from the outside (they of course do not tell you that). To see how it affects and the damage it can cause (and usually does) click here.

2. Screen hinges seating tightening, lubrication and loosening if needed.

On every single laptop with metal hinges, after aproximatelly 2 years, the screen hinges start to seize up slowly, without us noticing. After a certain period of time, due to the hinges not being lubricated in the factory (we wonder why) the hinges seize totally and one day you open the screen and instead the hinge doing it's work, it gets ripped out of either the bottom casing and opens a gaping hole in the body, or it get's ripped out of the screen. If you are very lucky, it will not break the screen panel, but that's about a 50/50 chance from our experience.

3. All contacts and connectors will be disconnected and treated with contact spray

4. A software service

This service consists of cleaning out OS temporary caches, deep virus scan and stopping of all unnecessary background processes that slow the OS down.

Your laptop will be scanned with professional antivirus and malware software, to make sure there are no viruses hiding on your system.

5. Last but not least, a final external polish, to make it look like new again!
